The watching ... the end of day two

It really was a remarkable day. Charlie and Laura were psyched and frankly the rest of us wer too. Okay we were a little jealous, but who could begrudge a newlywed couple the ultimate sensual experience? Huh. Maybe penultimate. Oh never mind.

As we were coming in for the afternoon, the friendly whales continued to tease us a bit. This one waved at us as if to say "g'bye we might see you tomorrow." Did I mention that it was a pretty amazing day.

The rest of that afternoon was calm and quiet. We took a few pictures and relaxed a bit before dinner. (As an aside, throughout the stay at camp the foood was marvelous -- especially when you consider that they did it all with propane and solar.) Just so you don't think that the only wildlife we saw were whales, here's a nice picture of some birds. I don't know what kinds of birds though (sorry, Bob and Carol.)

The watching ... day three

Was I sure we were going to "get lucky" on day three? No, but this scene seemed like a good omen. You may need to enlarge it to see what I mean, but I think that whale was telling those three boats it was friendly. I also think if you look closely enough that most of the people in the boat closest to shore have their backs to the spy-hopping whale. Hehehehe.

I think now might be a good time for a short lesson on whale watching terminology. A "Spy hop" is when a whale sticks its snout out of the water as if standing on its tale. A "breach" is when the whale rushes to the surface and comes most of the way out of the water before splashing back in. The image to the left shows this process.
